Residents in Brighton and Hove now have two opportunities to combine a love of cats with shopping. Following on from last year’s launch of the Cats Protection shop in Blatchington Road Hove, Brighton now also boasts a shop on Beaconsfield Road near the corner of Springfield Road.
Brighton residents Chris Steed and Stephen Webb, who appear on the Gogglebox TV show, opened the Brighton store. A friend of Chris is a CP volunteer and the pair are big cat fans.
Proceeds from the Hove shop help to support the work of the local CP branch, while the Brighton shop will support the National Cat Centre in Haywards Heath. Mark Verity, area retail manager, South East at CP, says the Brighton shop will aim to get involved with local events as well as highlighting the work of CP.
If you visit either store hoping to find a cat, you’ll be disappointed! However, details about how to foster, adopt, volunteer or otherwise support CP is available. There is a wide range of stock in the stores, including clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery, DVDs, CDs, books and children’s toys. This is in addition to cat-themed CP products including gift cards, notepads and mugs.
Both stores are open from 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am-4pm Sundays. Donations are always welcome and an advantage of the Brighton location is a large loading zone at the front of the store. Call 01273 565 675 if you want to check with the shop first.
Volunteers are also welcome at both stores – again call the number above for Brighton and for Hove: 01273 779 372.
The retail store charity sector has become very competitive, says Mark. “The sector is now more quality driven than in the past. We want to ensure that our shop becomes a destination and that our shoppers have reason to visit again and again.”
This also applies in Hove, which has many charity shops, particularly on George St. Store manager Caroline says Hove has become a charity shopping destination and competition is fierce.
