The Christmas shopping season is under way and there are plenty of options for cat lovers and their cats in Brighton and Hove. The following is just a selection of the gifts available throughout the city.
For the cat lover
Local retailer Bert’s Home Store, at 155-156 Western Road, 33 George St in Hove and 10 Kensington Gardens in North Laine has the fun Animal Adventures Pet Photobooth for £7.99. Suitable for cats (and small dogs), simply build the cardboard cube and snap your feline friend as an astronaut, hula dancer, Viking, cowboy or superhero. The cube measures about 31.5cm x 31.5cms.
Bert’s also has a selection of mugs, including the Cat Mug at £9.99, the top of which is shaped like a cat.
Poundland, which has stores at 166-168 Western Road and 143 North Street, represents great value for cat lovers. In addition to gifts for cats (see below), cat lovers will appreciate the heart-shaped wooden ornament that displays the legend: “Cats leave paw prints on your heart.”
If the cat lover in your life is also a book lover, there are many options. WH Smith at Churchill Square has a special deal on James Bowen’s street cat books. A Street Cat Named Bob and The World According to Bob are available on a buy one, get one free offer. Individually, the books cost £8.99 and £7.99 respectively. The books are about an extraordinary cat and the young man he rescued. The reader also gets insight into just how easy it is to become homeless and the impact it has.
Other cat-themed books at WH Smith include Christmas at the Cat Café, by Melissa Daley for £8.99 and Alfie and George, by Rachel Wells (£9.99).
Calendar Club, which operates on the top floor concourse at Churchill Square is stocking a wide number of cat calendars. These range from the page a day gallery series at £12.99, 365 Cats (£9.99) and Bad Cats (kitties and cats gone bad) at £9.95. There are also cats and kittens calendars of the ‘long thin variety’ at £5.99 and other more classical 18-month calendars of various themes including Cat Naps, Yoga Kittens (and Cats) and Cat Selfies. These range from £4.99-£9.99.
Accessorize, also in Churchill Square, is worth visiting for stocking fillers and decorations. A cute knitted decoration of a bespectacled cat for the Christmas tree is £5. There are also pens and erasers and other stationery items with a cat theme. Buyers can also purchase socks featuring cat patterns that are on offer for £3.50 and three for two.
Near Brighton Station, North Laine is great for a very individual shopping experience. Most of the stores are independent outlets and cat lovers are well catered for.
Malarkey, 34 Bond Street, stocks a huge range of greetings cards including some very funny cat themed ones. It also has books: 97 Ways to Make a Cat Like You, by Carol Kaufmann, £6.99; Cat Selfies, by Charlie Ellis, £6.99, and How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You, £9.99 (including a poster). The shop also sells an elegant cat-shaped key ring, by Munkees at £4.50.
A few doors up at 27 Bond Street, This is Not a Butchers, stocks a very wide range of cat-themed items. Be warned – this shop gets very crowded!
There’s nothing better in this cold weather than to snuggle up with your cat on the cold winter evenings. Artemis at 2 Kensington Gardens in North Laine stocks sheep skins, ranging from £45. These will treat not only the cat owner, but also the cat!
For the cat
Argos, at 157-162 Western Road, has a full range of cat accessories. Now the weather has turned cold, why treat kitty to a Car Radiator Bed, which hangs off a central heating radiator. These retail at £9.99. There are also various beds and igloos ranging from £8.99 up to £29.99 for the Tramps Aristocratic cat bed.
There is also a wide range of cat scratching posts and activity centres. Top of the range is the £69.99 Plush Cat House and Scratcher. It provides plenty for your cat to do. A more straightforward option is the £6.99 Cat Scratching Post. You can also consider the Purrfect Arch Self Grooming Massager and Scratch Base at £19.99 – useful if you don’t have time to groom your cat yourself. If your cat is a catnip fan, look at the £12.99 Scratch ’n Play scratch board and catnip toy.

Catnip treats are plentiful and the King Catnip Banana at £5.99 is a great option – my cat has spent many happy hours caressing it.
